Welcome to Chemainus Secondary School

Chemainus Secondary School (CHSS) is a vibrant learning community located in the heart of the picturesque town of Chemainus on the eastern coast of Vancouver Island. Serving students in Grades 7–12, CHSS is proud to be part of the Cowichan Valley School District (SD79) and has been a cornerstone of education in the region since its founding in 1953.

We welcome students from Chemainus, Crofton, Thetis Island, Saltair, and Penelakut Island, and are committed to fostering a safe, inclusive, and caring environment where all learners are supported to be their best selves. Our dedicated staff work collaboratively to create spaces where students thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.

At Chemainus Secondary, we honour the land on which we learn and grow. We acknowledge that our school is situated near the historic village of Shts’emines and rests on the traditional and unceded territories of the Stz’uminus, Penelakut, Halalt, and Lyackson Nations. We also recognize the enduring presence and contributions of the Malahat, Cowichan, and Métis Peoples in our community. We are committed to walking together in the spirit of Truth and Reconciliation, fostering respectful relationships and deepening our understanding of Indigenous histories, cultures, and ways of knowing.
