Welcome to Our School and Our Community

Chemainus Secondary School (CHSS) wishes to welcome all new and returning students to the 2018-2019 school year. Chemainus Secondary is a Grade 8-12 school of approximately 300 students that provides a full educational program within a flexible, caring and safe environment.

Chemainus is a picturesque town located on the eastern coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia. The town is internationally recognized due to the 30+ huge murals painted on buildings throughout the community depicting the history of the local area. Students come from Chemainus as well as the neighboring communities Crofton and Saltair.

Chemainus Secondary School

Our Chemainus Secondary and Cowichan Secondary School students, teachers, and staff were honoured to showcase our district, and how we live Reconciliation in the Education System as part of this Government of British Columbia story. Thank you for letting us tell our part of our journey.

From the video:

The goal is not to simply update the content on Canada’s history – but to bring a richer, more meaningful shift to the education system. This involves being honest about the narrative of Canada and those Indigenous to the land, addressing racism, understanding Indigenous Knowledges and supporting language revitalization.. Strategic efforts include ensuring a welcoming and inclusive culture for students, supporting a knowledgeable workface and honouring jurisdiction with First Nations. All of this must be built within the inherent belief that the system is broken, not the child. Only then can Indigenous knowledges flourish in the education system for the betterment of all students.
